Literacy

In 1977, Altrusa became the first volunteer service group to adopt literacy as the focus of its community activities. In response, the Altrusa International Foundation incorporated “Action for Literacy” into its philanthropic focus and established the ABC Literacy Grants program. The Foundation has supported the efforts of countless local literacy councils and programs through its literacy awards.

Literacy has had various projects. We have supported the Literacy Council for many years, with money, supplies, and tutors. The latest project featured a calendar filled with literacy activities and art from local artists. The calendar was shared with students in four school districts: Bronson, Coldwater, Quincy, and Union City. In prior years we held a “Picture Me Reading”  project offering students in Branch County, Michigan, an opportunity to win prizes by entering a picture of themselves or a family member reading, with varying levels of writing accompanying the picture, telling why they love to read. Projects and donations often coincide with  “March Is Reading Month.”
