In 1977, Altrusa became the first volunteer service group to adopt literacy as the focus of its community activities. In response, the Altrusa International Foundation incorporated “Action for Literacy” into its philanthropic focus and established the ABC Literacy Grants program. The Foundation has supported the efforts of countless local literacy councils and programs through its literacy awards.
Literacy has two major projects. We have supported the Literacy Council for many years, with money, supplies, and tutors. Our second project is “Picture Me Reading”. We offer to all students in Branch County, Michigan, an opportunity to win prizes by entering a picture of themselves or a family member reading, with varying levels of writing accompanying the picture, telling why they love to read. This will involve approximately 1500 students in four school districts: Bronson, Coldwater, Quincy, and Union City. The contest coincides with the schools’ “March Is Reading Month.”
